Ok guys, the time has come to get your orders in for next year. In an effort to meet the requirements of more surf schools we now offer two different ranges of softboards, as well as Stand Up Paddleboards and paddles.

The construction of our standard PE Core softboard range is as follows:

High density closed cell polyethylene core. This will not absorb water should the outer skin be punctured.
XPE soft wrap over the deck.
HDPE based white slick bottom giving improved speed through the water.
Soft EVA rails which will protect both the user from injury and the board from damage.
Twin/triple/quad maple stringers, depending on board length.
Fully moulded plastic leash attachment
3 flexible yet durable, low profile fins designed to minimise the risk of injury and still be functional. Flexible fin bolts reduce the risk of breakages when boards are run up the beach (which they will be!).
Boards available 6', 7', 8', 9' & 10 lengths, plus 11' SUP
Deck colours available are dark blue, yellow or red
Rail colours available are light blue.

The construction of the EPS/Epoxy Core Softboards is as follows:

EPS Foam Core with twin laminated stringers
2 x 6ox epoxy fibreglass deck coating of the EPS core
1 x 6ox epoxy fibreglass deck coating of the EPS core
PE Foam wrap over epoxy fibreglass
iXPE deck available in number of colours
White HDPE slick bottom
EVA nose and tail block fixed with hollow fibreglass dowels
Optional 4mm EVA rail wrap to give greater durability.
Optional recessed carry handle in the deck on all boards. This makes carrying boards easy and stops people from dragging boards across the beach and causing damage.
Soft, flexible yet functional fins

Our new range of EPS/Epoxy core softboards have gone down really well this summer. Having initially intended to trial a few samples, the response was so positive that we had to get a factory order together quickly to satisfy surf schools in 6 countries!
The feedback from surf schools that have added them to their fleets this summer has been extremely positive. The trial with the offset carry handles on the 9' boards has proved very successful and we intend to introduce them as standard on all lengths for 2012. Not only do they provide conveninece for your customers, they will stop people from dragging boards across the beach becasue they can't get their arm round them. Even Amber (10) can carry a 9' with ease!

We still have some 8'6" and 9' boards in stock and will taking advance orders for the new boards up until November. Customers can choose from 7 different colours, handle/no handle and can also have free 'own logo' printing for orders of 10 boards or more.
The EPS/Epoxy Core, wrapped inside a traditional softboard exterior gives the boards stiffer characteristics than our standard softboards and results in a far better surfing experience. The boards extra width and thickness gives them much more volume than our standard softboard range making them excellent for complete beginners. The flotation and stability is exceptional but even more amazing is their performance, given all that volume. This makes them excellent for progressing beginner surfers through to the intermediate ranks, thus making them true all rounders.

The time has come to think about next year, in fact the time came a while ago but I've just been so busy.....
Anyway, our softboard production details for 2011 need to be confirmed with our factory at the end of October 2010. This is to ensure that we get everything here in time for delivery around Easter 2011.
As ever, our boards are constantly evolving as a result of our own experiences and most importantly from customer feedback.
Developments for 2011 are as follows:

Heat laminated HDPE slick bottoms. These have been tested extensively over the last 12 months in Australia and feedback has been very positive.
8', 9' and 10' soft surfboards will now have 3 maple wood stringers to improve strength and rigidity.
10' and 11' Stand Up Paddle Boards feature 4 maple wood stringers.
SUP rescue board type handles will be fixed with stainless steel machine screws and stainless steel threaded inserts.

Softboard orders of 10 boards or more placed by Friday 29th October can benefit from free single colour logo printing and free leashes.

Whenever I travel and paddle out at a break in someone else's backyard I make a point of saying hello to the locals and giving them their due respect. I'll sit off the peak, give space and generally not make a nuisance of myself but at the same time get my fair share of waves and hopefully earn some mutual respect.
Conversely, I expect the same respect from others when they visit my humble little beachy. I would prefer it if visitors to my local break would leave their stressy attitudes at the other end of the motorway network and give us a little respect.
Just sayin' that's all......

Local legend and founder of Crackington Haven Surf Life Saving Club sadly passed away recently. The older members of the club will have fond memories of Len on his home made twin fin longboard, taking off out beyond the rest of the pack and cruising through the lineup, often with the cry of 'Coming through'.
Without Len the surf club would not be there today. Not only was he a founder member in 1959 but he kept the club on track during some of its more difficult times.
We're planning a mass 'paddle out' of club members to pay our respects to Len in the very near future.

Planning Application 2010/00352 – NOTIFICATION OF REFUSAL

Well the waiting is over and the decision that looked increasingly likely over the last few weeks has been given. We have failed in our bid to extend our surf hire season on the piece of land near the Crackington Surf Life Saving Club.
I'd just like to say a big 'thank you' to those who have supported us along the way. This has been an eye opening experience to say the least.
Hypocrisy rules the roost.
Are we going to appeal? Nah, bollocks to it, I really don't feel inclined to do so. I have absolutely no faith in the system. The nature of the application has no bearing on the outcome. It depends who you know not what you want to do.

There's more than one way to skin a cat.

OK, we have for sale two epoxy Stand Up Paddleboards. Now these puppies, or rather the owners, have been getting some pretty bad press of late. However, in the right hands, and with the correct etiquette there's a lot of fun to be had with them. In small clean waves they're a ball and on flat days there is nothing better than going off on a paddle exploring the finer details of the coastline or maybe doing a spot of fishing.
You don't need to be by the sea either as inland waterways can explored such as rivers, lakes and canals.
The two boards we have are a 10' 6" and an 11'0". Both come complete with an Ainsworth paddle and Creatures of Leisure deck grip.

On the 4th of May this year I published a post about the imminent decision regarding our planning application, no. 2010/00352, to extend our surf hire/sales season at Crackington Haven. Now, almost two months down the line we still do not have a decision. This delay by the planning department seems to be wholly unjustified and one can't help but wonder what their motives or reasons are. I won't speculate too much............do I need to?
I have pushed for a decision as we have a business to run which needs no small amount of organisation and forward planning but to date have been given nothing.

The serial objectors must be laughing that's for sure. Oh those objectors, how do some of them sleep at night? I recently exercised my right to obtain copies of all correspondence received by the planning department in relation to our application. This correspondence obviously includes letters both objecting to and supporting our proposal.
Now to my mind, everyone has the right to express their opinion and I have been open minded enough to listen to and try to understand all the reasons for objection. I might not necessarily agree with them but I listen and take on board their arguments. Freedom of speech and the right to object is crucially important in our society and are rights that our forefathers fought for. Hey, without them we'd be like North Korea and not be allowed to watch our football team unless they win.....hmmm now there's a thought. Anyway, I digress.....
Having read all the correspondence I am in a state of something crossed between disbelief, shock and anger. The rabidity and venomous nature of some of the letters is bad enough but the worst thing about many of them is that they have based their arguments around blatant lies and fabrications, some examples of which follow:

'There are two cafes, both of which sell and rent surfing equipment.' Only one does and they have limited resources and experience in this field. The word 'Cafe' is a clue.

'This surf shop was set up on this site in 2009 for 30 days without any permission, the owner parked his van on the access road to the beach which caused an obstruction to any emergency vehicles that have to get to the beach, it also caused others to park across the access road.' The business operated for 28 days under the permitted development rule and had the full permission of the landowner. The owners van was parked on private land and did not obstruct anybody, let alone any emergency vehicles. The owner cannot be responsible for the parking habits of others.
'...illegal car parking on the footpath/SW trail...' The business did not park any vehicles on the footpath and the business operated on private land at all times.
'Any business in this area would present a hazard to the public and emergency services alike' Do I need to comment further on that?
'Health and safety issues should be considered as this beach is not suitable for novice surfers/bodyboarders' due to the partly submerged rock formations and rips' If the writer had any knowledge of the beach they would be aware that it is regarded as one of the safest on the North Cornish coast. As we are RNLI/BSA registered we are obliged to give out safety leaflets and specific local safety information. Our boards are SOFT boards designed specifically for novice surfers and used by surf schools throughout the UK and Europe. We are approved suppliers of soft surfboards to members of the RNLI/BSA Surf Hire Safety Scheme.

...'unauthorised use last year for 28 days led to blocking and misuse of the coastal path'
'If there are cars parked along the road there, nothing will get past and I have seen even the Bus getting stuck there. And then, what about Emergency Services, they would not stand a chance to rescue anybody from the beach and you can forget about the Fire Service.....' Obviously a retired tabloid journalist.

Can you imagine a planning officer sitting in their office reading this? Why wouldn't they believe it? The reality however is that it's a load of bullshit written by people trying to sway the opinion of the planning officers by making stuff up. They're not even exaggerations or twists of the truth, they're just plain lies.

So this is what we get for trying to do things by the rule book. It doesn't really give any incentive to do things by the book in the future does it.

I have lived here virtually all my life and have an affection for and an understanding of the beach, second to none. I used to have deep affection and respect for of the community in Crackington Haven and the wider parish of St. Gennys but I have to say that there is a dark undercurrent that disgusts me now. I remember I was working away in Hong Kong when the 2004 flood happened and felt really shocked when I saw the news and heard what had happened. Upon my return I expected to find a parish united by disaster but was dismayed to find bickering and back stabbing prevailing. It's a sad state of affairs that remains today. A community split by what? Rival factions? I really don't know where it all started. I do remember the local builders working on the development of The Cabin several years ago, being verbally abused by the very people that are now the most regular customers of the establishment and the biggest supporters of its further development.

Thankfully I am only talking about a relative minority and there are many members of the community for whom I have the utmost respect. These are people who understand the needs of the community and appreciate that we are a living breathing parish where people live and work. Like me they also want to take care of and preserve the parish.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have written letters to the council supporting our application . I would also like to thank all those that have given verbal support and encouragement and also those that have had the decency to explain their opposition to my face.

I'm sure our application will be rejected and some of you reading this might be thinking 'sour grapes' and I understand that. However this goes much deeper and as mentioned above it has been bubbling beneath the surface for many years. The hatred and bitterness within the parish was really highlighted to me during my brief spell on the parish council. It absolutely stinks.

It's not about what you want or don't want to do, or about AONBs or SSSIs. It's about which gang you're in or show allegiance towards.
Cynical? Maybe but I'm entitled to my opinion, just like the rest of 'em.

Our political system is showing itself to be an even bigger load of bollocks and more of a shambles than even I could have thought. That is really saying something, trust me.
It seems like the future of the country is in the hands of the guy who came a distant third. From my point of view as a neutral observer (seriously, I think they're all equally dishonest, self-serving and smarmy) it is absolutely ridiculous. We must be an international laughing stock! Imagine if the Liberals had come had come first but Labour and the Tories formed a coalition! Ludicrous.

Progression, Preservation, Stagnation....what is to be?

The day of reckoning for our planning application to extend our surf hire season is almost upon us. Thanks to everyone who has supported us and also thanks and respect to those who object to the application but have the decency and honesty to tell me to my face.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I understand and respect that. I am open minded enough to see both sides of the argument and where necessary, agree to disagree. I wish everyone else had the same attitude.
So which way will the decision go? I am almost and I do mean almost but not completely, past caring to be honest. The whole process has been very tiring and I almost wish I had never bothered with it. I feel I was slightly naive in underestimating the controversy that the issue has raised. Having received largely positive feedback from people last year when we did the 28 days I assumed the support would continue, which to a large extent it has but with some unforseen exceptions. However, there have obviously been the usual 'serial' and obdurate objectors. No surprises there.
To put it plainly and simply I'm just a local person trying to make a living in the parish where I was raised. I am as keen to preserve the place as the next man but I am also keen to make it a sustainable community.
Being plastered over the front page of The Cornish Guardian and in the local St. Gennys Gazette has actually been quite tiresome. Initially I found it shocking, then funny, followed by a feeling of gratitude for the free publicity. After a few days though it became very annoying and also awkward explaining to my kids why I'd made the papers and why people were against our small family business.
I'm so over it now that words are beginning to fail me. Maybe small businesses just aren't welcome in the parish and we should just bugger off and try to make our living elsewhere. I remember 'Stoveman' being run out of the parish, albeit only to Jacobstow but out of the parish nonetheless.
Spend money here by all means, just don't try and make a living here....or even live here judging by the anti-local housing policy that the parish council seems to have adopted. How long before Crackington Haven has a brown 'tourist' road sign from the A39? Maybe pony and trap rides around the parish would be looked upon more favorably. We could all dress up in smocks with red/white neck scarves and carry pitch forks for the amusement of the visitors. Maybe a few of us could hang about in oil skins carrying baskets of plastic mackerel due to the fact that launching boats from the beach is looked upon as an evil practice which should be outlawed. Nice image and it'll make the place look authentically quaint and Cornish.
Rant over. Bollocks to it all.

Planning Application 2010/00352 – Supplementary Information

To supplement the original planning application captioned above, we would like to provide the following information to clarify the nature of the proposed retail and hire operation at Crackington Haven. The application asks for a proposed season ‘between the Thursday immediately preceding the Friday before Good Friday or 31st March (whichever is the earlier) and 30th October, in any year.’ The intention is not to run each and every day during this period but to have the ability to open during all school holidays and any other busy periods, where weather and sea conditions permit. The business will be conducted from a 3m x 3m mini marquee which will normally be removed from site at the end of each business day, as was the case last year. Equipment will be transported to and from the site daily using our van and possibly a box trailer.

As members of the Surf Hire Safety Scheme, a joint venture between the RNLI and The British Surfing Association, NCS Surfboards have certain obligations and standards to maintain with regard to our surf hire business. These include the following:
• to only rent equipment suitable to the hirer's ability
• to provide safety information to all customers
• to check equipment regularly for damage
• to maintain adequate insurance

We liaise closely with the RNLI lifeguards, give real time advice on surf conditions and will not rent out equipment if we consider the conditions to be unsuitable. With over 30 years experience of surfing at Crackington we are ideally placed to provide the right advice on equipment and local surf and beach conditions. If we are permitted to operate outside the RNLI lifeguard season we will still be there to give advice and safety briefings when lifeguards are not present. As an ex-lifeguard myself I can’t help but notice when people are getting themselves into dangerous situations and although not offering an actual lifeguard service our presence at the beach can only help. Already this Easter, I have assisted four people from the rip current on the left hand side of the beach. By handing out RNLI safety leaflets to passers by, not just our customers, we are actively promoting safety at the beach and helping to reduce any incidents.
Our presence at the beach last August was welcomed by many visitors and locals alike. Many people said how pleased they were to see such a facility and to be able to rent or buy surf equipment whilst being given sound, honest advice. People in the tourist trade have also been supportive indicating that our presence at Crackington Haven provides visitors with a much needed facility.

Well, this really is all getting very, very silly now. I had a call from a lady at The Cornish Guardian this morning asking for my reaction to allegations that I am 'developing and commercialising' Crackington Haven. Apparently several letters have been received portraying me as some evil tycoon.
Wow! Oh well they say there is no such thing as bad publicity except for your own obituary and I hope we haven't reached that stage yet.
Oh yeah, back to my reaction......no, on second thoughts I'd better not.

NCS Surf Hire/Sales Tent 2010

Following the success of our temporary surf hire and sales tent at Crackington Haven last year, we have applied to extend our season beyond the 28 days allowed without planning permission. We have applied for a season stretching from the week before Easter until the 31st October in any year. Clearly, as we operate from a mini-marquee, we won't physically be able to operate for the entire period due to the weather. What we are seeking is the option to be able to open up over Easter and anytime through to the end of October, should the weather permit. Having lived in Crackington virtually all my life, apart from a period of time spent working away, I completely understand the need to preserve and maintain our wonderful environment. However, I also understand that Crackington is a village where people live, work and strive to make a living in an area where opportunities are limited to say the least. We need to support local businesses and affordable local housing in order to make our community sustainable. We are not an exhibit, we are a real community with real people and would like to stay that way.

The nights might be cold but Spring is definitely in the air. Hopefully there'll be some waves to go with the beautiful weather soon.
As far as our boards are concerned we will be receiving our 2010 stock of softboards towards the end of April. Although a large proportion of these boards are already pre-ordered there are still some available, so if you need anything please get in touch with us as soon as possible.

Quiet January Day

I'm still not allowed in the water following my ear surgery. It's funny but as time goes on the urge to surf seems to be somewhat suppressed. Don't get me wrong it's not snuffed out entirely but there seems to be more an acceptance of the need to be patient. The addiction seems to have been packaged away somewhere safe, ready to be brought out again when the day comes. Watching and photographing waves has never seemed so much fun.

I just thought I'd share with you this piccy of one of my kids' wetsuits hanging out to freeze. We've certainly had a bit of proper winter lately but is it just me or have the media sensationalised it a bit. Yes we've had snow, yes there's more to come, yes we've had ice but does it mean everything has to stop? Do France, Germany, Holland or any of the Scandinavian countries grind to a halt when winter sets in? Of course not. Yeah I know they're used to it and are more prepared for it but come on, life has to go on. Maybe the governement should issue all vehicle owners with a free set of snow chains so the country can continue to function.
Anyway, sorry about that, rant over! You can all laugh at me when I'm snowed in tomorrow!

Happy New Year to you all and (nearly) Happy New Ear to me. Not allowed back in the water yet following my surfer's ear operation but hoping to be back in a couple of weeks. Given the current temperature I'm not too bothered to be honest, although with a new board to try and good swell on the way I reckon I'll be getting twitchy once the waves arrive.
Boardculture samples are on the way and should be here soon, snow permitting. 2010 Softboard orders are still being taken and we still have some available stock from the consignment arriving in April, allthough it is being reserved fast.

Exostoses....or Surfer's Ear to you

As you can see from my previous post I've just had my ear operated on for Surfer's Ear. Otherwise known as exostoses, surfer's ear is a boney growth in the ear canal that is brought on by repeated exposure to cold water and wind. This boney growth will eventually close the ear canal and obscure the ear drum. Not only does this impair your hearing but it also leads to complications with ear infections as water and debris gets trapped behind the growth.
Anyway, my surgeon at the Royal Cornwall Hospital has just e-mailed me 'before and after' internal shots of my ear. The first shows the boney growths with the grey ear drum just visible behind. The second shows the now exposed ear drum after the bone has been removed but before the incisions have been closed and the skin flaps re-positioned.
Ear plugs anyone?

Autumn 2009 Ordering for 2010 Season

One we taught earlier on NCS Softboards - Sean cruising.

Well it's been a while since my last post as we've been pretty busy here at NCS. Due to a change in our normal production schedule, we have had to instruct our first production run for next season much earlier than usual. This has now been done and as orders have been flooding in the majority of the boards have now been pre-ordered, although there are still some available.
If all goes well we will be instructing another production run in the New Year but this is by no means guaranteed at this stage.
So, the upshot of it all is that if you are planning ordering boards for next season then please do so as soon as possible to avoid dissapointment.
Boards for 2010 will feature the same high volume shapes as this year but with the added benefit of HDPE slick bottoms to give greater durability and fully moulded plastic 'bar' type leash plugs.

To be honest I've been holding off publishing this for a while for a number of reasons. Mainly because I couldn't get the photo off my phone but I also wondered whether it was a bit weird to post it or not and wanted to make sure it was healing properly first etc etc.
Anyway, the time has come to show the world what happened to the poor young fella in a freak surfing accident which saw the bottom of his foot slashed with a longboard fin. This what not the result of carelessness or recklessness but was just one of those unfortunate incidents that happen when we least expect them.
Anyway, the good news is that after 10 days the stitches are now out and he is well on the road to recovery but It'll be a week or two before he's back in the water. Thankfully it hasn't put him off and it's all I can do to keep him out of the sea.
Get well soon Sean, hope to see you back in the line up soon!

Just had a few days on the Emerald Isle sampling the black stuff, surfing with dolphins and oh yeah, delivering boards.
Yep, you read it right, surfing with dolphins. 3-4' and glassy at Inch Reefs and a pod of dolphins showing us how it should be done. It was an incredible experience and one I'll never forget. Sadly, as noted in a post below, I lost my waterproof camera a few weeks ago so couldn't record the event. So you'll have to make do with the Cliffs of Moher and a pub sign. Two icons of Ireland nevertheless.

What a stressful work week this is turning out to be. This is as high pressure as anything I had during my project management days in Hong Kong and just what I moved back to Cornwall to avoid. Seems like there is a common theme though with the involvement of my oriental friends.
However, looking at the charts for the weekend I am hoping to score some medicine of the flavour pictured above. The ultimate stress relief.

Camera free

I lost my camera the other day. I left it on a bench whilst riding the Camel Trail between Padstow and Wadebridge with my family. It's left me camera free and some lucky snapper a free camera. Hopefully they'll put it to good use. If you know of it's whereabouts please give me a shout, it's an Olympus 1030SW. Coincidentally a couple of days prior to my mishap, a good 'Friend O Mine' Rich, also lost his very same camera. Crackington is now devoid of any waterproof snappers but hopefully this won't last long. I'm lining up a new Olympus Tough 8000 unless anyone has any better ideas.

Spring

For those of us who've been stuck here all winter it's so good to finally feel the warmth of the sun. For those of you returning from a winter in the tropics, well all I can say is you've the luck of the Irish! With that in mind don't forget St. Pat's Day tomorrow. Have some black stuff for the ole' snake charmer!
Had a nice little surf yesterday with no gloves and actually got a little sunburn! Fantastic.
Easter is rushing up on us fast and softboard orders are coming in thick and fast so the available is rapidly diminishing. So, the bottom line is, if you need boards for this season give us a shout as soon as you can to avoid disappointment. Hopefully the spring weather is pointing towards a bumper season. After the last two summers I do believe we deserve a good one.

Well, I missed out on wishing you all a Happy New Year so I'll now wish you all 'Kung Hei Fat Choy' 恭喜發財 (Happy Chinese New Year), 2009 The Year of the Ox. Let's hope it's a good one.

The weight of expectation on his shoulders is immense but there is a certain degree of optimism with the inauguration of Barack Obama. Good luck to the man. He's taken over in pretty much the worst possible circumstances so let's hope he is given a chance to make things happen. It aint going to happen overnight so be patient.

2009 has certainly produced some noteworthy waves so far with several plenty big enough days! I even put a brand new leash on one day as a precautionary measure. Hellish cold as well. The local points have been firing and the usual suspects have been seen in the line up, minus a few that have legged it to warmer climes for a few months. Lucky bastards!

Our 2009 softboards will be ready for delivery for Easter so if you haven't already got your order in, then do so now to ensure you get the softboards you require for the coming season.
The 2009 boards are slightly fuller shaped and have more volume overall which will improve stability and bouyancy. Simply put, they are probabaly the best value softboards on the market and are durable enough for the daily abuse of the surf school and hire centre environments.
I'll try and be a little more conscientious in 2009 and publish posts on a regular basis.

Glorious day.......

What fantastic day it is here! OK so the surf might not be perfect but there are waves and the sun is shining. Yeah ok it's cold but I love this weather and hope to get in the water at some point today. I've not been in for such a long time, in fact I missed November entirely! Disgraceful.
I need to get in to wash away all the doom and gloom of the current state of the economy. From a purely selfish point of view the current demise of the £ against the $ is nothing short of disastrous given that our business relies on imports. However, I will concede that in the past year or more the strength of the £ has been artificially high and some adjustment needed to be made although I didn't mean to this extent!
On a positive note the strength of the £ will help British manufacturers and exporters and hopefully will also help the good old local shapers dotted around our shores. I do believe that the importers of surfboards from Asia and the local shapers can coexist and that there is a niche for both but in recent times it is the local boys that have taken the hit. Maybe the exchange rates will now shine a little luck their way and bring a change in their fortunes.
Hopefully the economy and the currency rates will balance out and allow us all to exist happily together. However, in the good times and the bad, I do believe that, to a degree, we can make our own luck. Some things are unavoidable but there are things we can do to help ourselves. Diversify a little, adapt to the changing market and economic climate, look at things from a different angle or perspective and most of all stay positive.
As one door closes another will open somewhere.

Where will it all end? Who knows but we can't change it, just adapt to it.

I have just realised that we don't have any pictures of our soft Stand Up Paddleboards on the web site, so as a quick fix I'm posting one here.

Talking to machines.......

Seems like I've been on the 'phone for most of the day calling surf schools about their plans for next year regarding softboard purchases. The reality of it all however is that I've spent most of the day speaking to answer machines. This has been quite a frustrating experience, however, it has made the few real conversations held during the day that much more rewarding.
We seem to spend so much of our time these days talking to machines and giving numerical push button responses, that to have a telephone conversation with a real human being once in a while is quite refreshing.

Missed it today...saw good waves but now that we have limited day light it didn't happen. That seems to be the case so often at this time of year. Never mind it'll be there another day and hopefully I'll be ready for it.
